Reach, Roll, and Lift

Kevin Neeld

The reach, roll, and lift is a great exercise to activate/strengthen the lower trapezius. In most cases, the lower trap becomes weak relative to upper trap strength and/or secondary to poor posture and disuse. Interestingly, in the three U16-U18 teams that I'm working with, this exercise is, by far, the one that the kids have struggled with most. In my opinion, and while noting that the line of pull is different, an inability to perform this movement correctly disqualifies an athlete for overhead movements.
